Debbie Matters MAdEd, Bed, BA, Cert.PR Debbie is a professional facilitator, keynote speaker, author, and certified neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) practitioner based in Toronto, Ontario. She founded Your Communication Matters Inc. in September 2008 after having been a French teacher in eastern Canada, managing a marketing portfolio focused on charitable giving in the financial industry, and working in sales and education in the pharmaceutical industry in western and central Canada.
Your Communication Matters designs, develops and delivers training and development seminars focused on enhancing communication, effectiveness and relationship building as well as facilitating stakeholder consultation or planning sessions. Debbie has an adaptive approach to designing and delivering interpersonal communication and leadership seminars as well as strategic planning sessions.
Her philosophy of adult learning is based on constructivism which views learning as an active process where people learn and develop by integrating new knowledge into previous paradigms or understandings through reflection and social interaction (Phillips, 1995). She believes that as a facilitator of learning, she is responsible for keeping people focused and engaged in an enjoyable way; after all, learners are not simply knowledge receptacles (Riggs & Hellyer-Riggs, 2011).
She customizes off-the-shelf leadership and communication seminars, builds programs according to your needs, and tailors seminars using assessment tools such as Wiley Publishing’s Everything DiSC in the Workplace. Debbie has experience facilitating programs in government agencies within municipal, provincial, and federal agencies. She has also worked with private sector organizations in such industries as academic, aviation, energy, engineering, food services, health care, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, retail, telecommunications, and professional services (accounting, information technology, customer relationship marketing, and financial services) organizations. Her goal is to equip you, your team and your organization to get things done faster, easier and with less stress through effective communication.
In March 2011, Debbie’s first book was released: If I Ran this Place... Communication for Results. In March 2012, her story “My Role Matured as I Did” was published in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Family Caregiver. She has completed research with St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, focused on how to foster transformative learning in workplace seminars.
